Turkish Airlines Embarks on a $2.3B Aviation Infrastructure Expansion
Turkish Airlines has unveiled an ambitious TRY 100 billion ($2.3 billion) investment plan aimed at bolstering Turkey’s aviation infrastructure. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to become a global leader in the aviation industry by 2033. The groundbreaking ceremonies for eight new facilities, primarily located at Istanbul Airport – the carrier’s home base, were held on January 8, 2026.
The extensive investment program is set to significantly boost the capacity of Turkish Cargo from 2.2 million tons to 4.5 million tons annually. This will be achieved through the expansion of the SmartIST Phase 2 air cargo terminal. Other key projects include:
- One of Europe’s largest aircraft engine maintenance centers capable of servicing next-generation Rolls Royce engines
- A large-scale catering facility designed to serve over 500,000 passengers daily
- New aircraft maintenance hangars set to increase capacity by 20%
This initiative is projected to generate 26,000 new jobs in 2026, which is expected to rise to 36,000 upon completion of all phases. Prof. Ahmet Bolat, the Chairman of Turkish Airlines, expressed that these investments will enhance the airline’s global competitiveness and establish Turkey as a leading aviation hub. The company’s economic contribution to Turkey, currently standing at $65 billion, is forecasted to reach $144 billion by 2033.
