Global Tourism Triumphs: Record 1.4 Billion Arrivals Mark 2024 Recovery

International tourism has triumphantly rebounded from the pandemic’s crippling impact. A staggering 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals were recorded globally in 2024, according to UN Tourism data. This milestone signifies the complete resurgence of the tourism sector from the most severe crisis in its history.

The Middle East spearheaded the recovery, boasting arrivals 32% above pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, Europe celebrated the arrival of 747 million international visitors, a figure 1% higher than 2019 levels. The year 2024 also saw international tourism receipts hit a record-breaking USD 1.6 trillion, marking a 3% growth over 2023 and a 4% increase above pre-pandemic levels in real terms.

“In 2024, global tourism completed its recovery from the pandemic and, in many places, tourist arrivals and earnings are already higher than in 2019,” stated UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili. “Growth is expected to continue throughout 2025, driven by strong demand contributing to socio-economic development worldwide.”
