ByteDance Bets $23 Billion on AI Infrastructure in 2026 Spending Push

ByteDance, the Beijing-based technology giant behind TikTok and Douyin, is preparing one of the boldest AI investment plans yet by a Chinese tech company. According to a Financial Times report confirmed by multiple sources, the company has set a preliminary capital expenditure budget of approximately $23 billion (RMB 160 billion) for 2026.

The planned budget is up from roughly RMB 150 billion invested in AI infrastructure in 2025. More than half of the 2026 budget—around $12–13 billion—is earmarked for AI processors.

ByteDance has also reportedly placed a trial order for approximately 20,000 Nvidia H200 chips, estimated to cost around $20,000 each. The order comes as the company seeks access to top-tier AI hardware amid U.S. export controls that complicate chip procurement for Chinese firms.

The investment is expected to support Doubao, ByteDance’s AI assistant app, as well as advertising and content recommendation systems across its platforms. Doubao is currently China’s most popular AI chatbot, with more than 155 million weekly active users.

Although ByteDance’s spending still trails that of U.S. Big Tech companies such as Meta and Alphabet, which have collectively committed more than $300 billion in AI capital expenditure, the scale of its plans underscores the intensifying global race to build AI infrastructure. Analysts say the investment could grow further if restrictions on Nvidia chip exports are eased.
