Fluoride-Free Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste: Hype or the Real Deal?

A wave of consumers is ditching traditional fluoride toothpaste in favor of a mineral-based alternative—and dentists are taking notice. Hydroxyapatite toothpaste, made with a calcium phosphate mineral that naturally forms most of tooth enamel, is gaining popularity as a fluoride-free oral care option in 2026.

A major report published by NPR/KPBS on November 2, 2026, examines the growing demand for hydroxyapatite products and what the science says. Dental researcher Dr. Amaechi, who has studied hydroxyapatite extensively, said early research shows promise for remineralizing enamel and preventing tooth decay. He noted that it appears “as effective as fluoride” for these purposes.

One study, published in Frontiers in Public Health, tracked 171 adults over 18 months. Participants using hydroxyapatite toothpaste had similar cavity outcomes to those using conventional fluoride toothpaste. However, experts caution that most participants were healthy young adults. More long-term research is needed, particularly for people at higher risk of tooth decay.

Among the brands entering the market is Davids Health Sciences, which recently launched its Hydroxi Whitening + Enamel Health Unflavored Toothpaste. The product features proprietary nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) technology, costs $9.95, and is available at davids-usa.com.

Before switching toothpaste, consult your oral health provider—especially if you’re at high risk of tooth decay.
