Apple Unveils iPhone Duo: A New Era of Foldable iPhones Priced at $1,999

Marking its entry into the foldable smartphone market, Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo at its “Surprise and Shine” keynote event on September 9, 2026. This significant launch, the first under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus, introduces a book-style device with a 5.4-inch outer cover screen that unfolds to a 7.6-inch inner display – the largest iPhone screen ever produced by Apple.

At the heart of the iPhone Duo is Apple’s revolutionary A20 Pro chip. This is the world’s first high-volume smartphone processor built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer process. The chip boasts a 6-core CPU that is up to 20% faster than its predecessor, a 7-core GPU that is up to 40% more power-efficient, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine that offers twice the AI compute power of the A19 Pro. According to Apple, the chip, when combined with a custom vapor chamber cooling system, delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

The iPhone Duo is an eSIM-only device that supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and mmWave 5G in U.S. models. Pre-orders commence on October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability starting from October 23, 2026. The device is priced starting at $1,999. Apps such as Netflix, Zoom, and Slack have already been optimized for the folding design, leveraging the new Split View multitasking capabilities.
