Record-Breaking Heat Dome in Europe Disrupts Summer Travel

EUROPE, July 9, 2026 — A devastating heat dome is causing millions of summer tourists to reconsider their travel plans. This extreme weather event is producing record-breaking temperatures across Europe and causing major disruptions to travel, transport, and public health.

Since late May 2026, severe heatwaves have shattered records in at least 12 countries, including:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Poland
  • Romania
  • Spain
  • United Kingdom

France experienced its hottest day since measurements began in 1947, with temperatures reaching 44.3°C (111.7°F) in the town of Pissos. Spain’s national weather agency AEMET reported highs above 45°C in the south. The World Health Organization (WHO) has linked more than 1,300 excess deaths across Europe to the heatwave since late June. Spain alone has attributed over 1,000 excess deaths to heat during its second-hottest June on record.

Heat-related disruptions led to the cancellation or delay of more than 3,100 European flights in a single 24-hour period in late June. Red alerts remain active across the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, and the heat is now shifting toward Italy and the Balkans into early July.

Health authorities recommend avoiding outdoor activity between 11am and 4pm, staying fully hydrated, and seeking air-conditioned spaces regularly. Travelers with flexible dates are advised to consider cooler destinations in Norway, Iceland, or Finland, or to postpone Southern European trips to the autumn months of September–October.
