Record Numbers of Americans Opt for Road Trips in Summer 2026

UNITED STATES, July 9, 2026 — The open road is calling Americans this summer in record numbers. A combination of patriotic celebrations, budget considerations, and a growing preference for domestic travel over pricier international trips are driving this trend, as per fresh data from various industry surveys.

Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report discloses a noteworthy statistic: 71% of Americans are planning to drive to their next vacation. This surge is partly propelled by the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations, peaking in July and inspiring a wave of nationwide road trips. Search traffic on Hilton.com indicates a strong inclination towards outdoor and regional favorites, with Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma City, Madison (Wisconsin), and Mobile, Alabama witnessing the most significant year-over-year increases.

The domestic travel boom is further substantiated by flight search platform JustFly. Their data shows domestic travel demand has risen by over 34% year over year, while international searches have dipped by 17.4%. Deloitte’s 2026 Summer Travel Survey further confirms that July will be the busiest month for summer travel, accounting for 31% of all planned summer trips. However, affordability remains a hurdle: a Talker Research survey for Current reveals that four in 10 Americans won’t travel this summer due to high costs.

Despite financial constraints, experience-led travel is flourishing. Airbnb reports that short-haul “playcations” centered around active hobbies — from surfing and golf to boating — are defining the American summer of 2026.
