Record-Breaking Tourism Boom in NYC Thanks to FIFA World Cup 2026
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the largest football tournament in history, is causing a significant upsurge in tourism across North America. New York City is leading the way among host cities, with hotel occupancy rates soaring above 90% during key match days. This data comes courtesy of commercial real estate analytics firm, CoStar.
For the first time in history, the tournament is co-hosted across three nations—the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It spans 16 host cities and features a record-breaking 104 matches with 48 competing teams. In the New York–New Jersey region, a June 16 fixture between France and Senegal at East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium saw hotel occupancy peak at 90.5%. The average daily room rate also climbed to a staggering $458.64.
Analysts from the Bank of America have forecast that the tournament could contribute approximately $45 billion to global GDP. The United States alone is expected to capture an estimated $19 billion through tourism, hospitality, transportation, and retail sectors. Airbnb has also chimed in, stating that they expect this to be their most successful event ever, even surpassing the 2024 Paris Olympics. This is largely due to families and groups seeking larger accommodations or lower per-person costs.
Marriott CEO Tony Capuano expressed his excitement about the impact of the FIFA World Cup on CNBC. He said, “We’re pretty enthusiastic about the impact of FIFA as we look at booking patterns coming into the summer.” The World Cup final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
