SpaceX Confirms Record-Breaking $60B Acquisition of AI Coding Assistant, Cursor
In a move that has made history, SpaceX has sealed a $60 billion all-stock deal to acquire Anysphere, the San Francisco-based company responsible for the highly sought-after AI coding assistant, Cursor. This groundbreaking deal was unveiled on June 16, 2026, a mere four days following SpaceX’s monumental Nasdaq IPO, which generated $75 billion at an initial price of $135 per share.
Cursor, established in 2022 by a team of four MIT graduates — CEO Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Aman Sanger, and Arvid Lunnemark — has experienced rapid growth. The company now reports approximately $4 billion in annualized revenue and serves over 50,000 enterprise customers, including engineers at OpenAI, Stripe, and Spotify.
SpaceX’s strategic intent is evident: its AI division, formed through its merger with Elon Musk’s xAI in February 2026, has been lagging behind competitors such as Microsoft (GitHub Copilot), Anthropic (Claude Code), and Google in the fiercely competitive AI developer tools market. The acquisition of Cursor provides SpaceX with an immediate advantage. The deal is slated to be finalized in Q3 2026, subject to regulatory approval, at which point Cursor will operate as a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary.
“We are excited to share that SpaceX has exercised their option to acquire Cursor… with the goal of building the world’s most useful AI models,” announced Cursor CEO Michael Truell.
