Unprecedented Surge in Airspace Violations Prompts Urgent NORAD Warning
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has issued a stern warning to the general aviation community. This comes in the wake of an unprecedented surge in Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) violations over the New York and New Jersey region.
In the first two weeks of June 2026 alone, NORAD confirmed that F-16 fighter jets intercepted over a dozen general aviation aircraft that strayed into restricted airspace. The cumulative total of unauthorized incursions near Bedminster, New Jersey, reached at least 15 by June 8.
One notable incident occurred on June 6. A civilian aircraft near Keansburg, New Jersey, was intercepted at approximately 1:40 p.m. EDT. The F-16 deployed flares to attract the pilot’s attention before safely escorting the aircraft out of the restricted zone. A second intercept took place on June 8 at 9:30 p.m. EDT in the same area. Additional TFR enforcement was triggered when President Trump traveled to New York City for Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
RCAF Major General David Moar, Director of NORAD Operations, emphasized that “most TFR violations are preventable”. He urged all pilots to thoroughly review NOTAMs and active TFRs before every flight. This is particularly important in the New York, New Jersey, and South Florida corridors. Violations can result in FAA enforcement action, flight disruptions, and military intercept procedures.
