FDA Greenlights Bemotrizinol: The First Novel Sunscreen Ingredient in Over Two Decades
In a groundbreaking victory for skincare enthusiasts nationwide, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially endorsed bemotrizinol (BEMT) — marking the debut of a novel active sunscreen ingredient in over 25 years. This pivotal decision, unveiled on June 9, 2026, concludes a prolonged stagnation in sunscreen innovation, leaving American consumers with significantly fewer UV-filter options compared to their counterparts in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Bemotrizinol, also promoted under the brand name PARSOL Shield, is a comprehensive chemical UV filter that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays within a single molecule. Importantly, it exhibits high photostability — implying it remains intact under intense sunlight — a stark contrast to avobenzone, the sole non-mineral chemical filter in the U.S. providing substantial UVA coverage. The FDA has categorized BEMT as “generally recognized as safe and effective” (GRASE) for adults and children as young as 6 months old, given its minimal skin absorption.
The skincare community, including dermatologists and consumer advocates, are hailing this development. Alexa Friedman, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group (EWG), pointed out that current U.S. sunscreens deliver, on average, a mere 24% of the UVA protection indicated on their SPF labels. The introduction of bemotrizinol is anticipated to significantly shift this dynamic. Manufacturers are permitted to start incorporating BEMT into their formulations from August 9, 2026, with the first products expected to hit the shelves under the PARSOL Shield brand by the year’s end. Following an 18-month exclusivity period, other manufacturers will also be allowed to use the ingredient.
