Outrage Ignites as GitHub Copilot Shifts to Token-Based Pricing
Microsoft is currently under fire as GitHub Copilot transitions from a flat-rate subscription model to a token-based billing system, effective June 1, 2026. This pricing alteration, which now charges users based on tokens consumed rather than a fixed monthly fee, has ignited a storm of protest across developer communities, with reports of dramatic cost increases.
Developers have reported their monthly bills soaring from a mere $29 to a staggering $750. Others claim costs have escalated from $50 to an eye-watering $3,000 per month for heavy usage. This change has particularly hit hard the agentic AI users who depend on Copilot for extensive code generation.
Social media platforms, including Reddit and X, are brimming with disgruntled comments. One user likened the move to the “Netflix strategy” of initially offering unlimited access before implementing usage-based pricing.
The timing of this change aligns with Microsoft’s plans to launch “One Copilot”, a super app designed to amalgamate GitHub Copilot, AI Chat, and other agentic tools under a single platform. While enterprise customers with negotiated contracts might be less affected, individual developers and small companies are questioning the viability of using AI coding assistants under the new pricing structure. This has effectively ended what many referred to as the “golden age” of affordable AI-assisted development.
