AI Takes the Helm: Merlin Labs Pioneers Autonomous Cessna Flight
Artificial intelligence (AI) has officially entered the cockpit. In a groundbreaking demonstration at Quonset State Airport in Rhode Island, startup Merlin Labs successfully flew a Cessna Caravan with a test pilot keeping his hands completely off the controls while AI handled all piloting tasks.
The Merlin Pilot system goes far beyond traditional autopilot. It uses natural language processing to listen to air traffic control instructions and responds over the radio with a computerized voice. The system autonomously handled takeoff, navigation, and landing, including managing a crosswind approach.
This development comes as airlines worldwide face a growing pilot shortage. According to Boeing, carriers will need more than 600,000 new pilots over the next two decades. Merlin has already secured a contract worth more than $100 million with the US Air Force to bring this technology to C-130 cargo planes.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has endorsed AI tools as part of efforts to modernize the nation’s air traffic control system, though he emphasized that “we are never going to outsource the national airspace to AI tools.”
The Air Line Pilots Association, representing more than 79,000 pilots, maintains a stance that:
- “Technological advancements can improve aviation safety, but they will never be a substitute for the pilots on an aircraft.”
