Spotify and Universal Music Group Ink Deal for AI-Generated Music Creation
Music streaming titan, Spotify, unveiled a groundbreaking licensing agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG) on May 21, 2026. This agreement marks a first in the industry, allowing users to create AI-generated covers and remixes of their favorite tracks.
Announced during Spotify’s Investor Day, this innovative deal is set to launch as a premium add-on, exclusively available to Spotify Premium subscribers. The participating artists and songwriters stand to gain from revenue sharing, over and above their existing Spotify royalties. The best part? Participation is entirely optional.
“The most valuable innovations in the music business always bring artists and fans closer together,” said Lucian Grainge, CEO of UMG. “This pioneering AI-enabled superfan initiative is designed to support human artistry, deepen fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters.”
The tool, powered by generative AI technology, signifies a major shift in the music industry’s approach to artificial intelligence. UMG’s roster boasts of major artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Drake, and Billie Eilish. While the financial terms and specific launch date remain under wraps, this announcement hints at a growing collaboration between streaming platforms and record labels on licensed AI music products.
Following the announcement, Spotify shares skyrocketed by 13%, coinciding with the reveal of AI-powered audiobook creation tools and podcast features.
