Airbnb Broadens Horizons: Introduces Hotels, Car Rentals and More in a Bid to Create a Comprehensive Travel Super-App
Airbnb unveiled a significant expansion on Wednesday, incorporating boutique hotels, car rentals, grocery delivery, and airport pickups into its platform. This move, spearheaded by CEO Brian Chesky, is a bold stride towards transforming the company into an “Amazon for travel services.” It marks Airbnb’s most audacious departure yet from its home-rental roots.
The summer 2026 release will introduce thousands of boutique and independent hotels across 20 major cities, including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore. These additions come with a price-match guarantee and offer up to a 15% credit back towards future stays. Car rentals are set to launch later this summer, providing a 20% credit for first-time users.
New services are being rolled out as well, such as:
- Grocery delivery through Instacart in over 25 U.S. cities
- Airport pickups via Welcome Pickups in more than 160 cities
- Luggage storage through Bounce at 15,000 locations across 175 cities
This expansion comes at a time when Airbnb is grappling with increasing regulatory pressure on its core short-term rental business. Spain imposed a $75 million fine in December, and Barcelona has refused to renew rental licenses expiring in 2028.
Airbnb also revealed enhanced AI features, including review summarizations and plans for voice integration in its chatbot. The company reported a Q1 2026 revenue of $2.68 billion, an 18% increase year-over-year, and anticipates the FIFA World Cup 2026 to be the largest single event in its history by guest volume.
