OpenAI Establishes First International Applied AI Lab in Singapore with $234M Investment

OpenAI announced on Wednesday its commitment of over $234 million to establish its first Applied AI Lab outside the United States in Singapore. This marks a strategic expansion for the ChatGPT maker as it deepens its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The partnership with Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information was unveiled at the ATx Summit on May 20.

The OpenAI Singapore Applied AI Lab plans to expand to more than 200 technical roles over the next few years. This move will position Singapore as a global hub for the company’s Forward-Deployed Engineers — specialists who work directly with organizations on complex AI deployment challenges. The lab will focus on national priorities such as:

  • Public services
  • Finance
  • Healthcare
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Education

Additionally, the lab will also concentrate on mid-career engineer training programs and AI startup accelerators.

The selection of Singapore over cities like London, Tokyo, or Dubai signals the city-state’s growing importance as a trusted AI hub. OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser cited Singapore’s strong technical talent, trusted institutions, and clear ambition to use AI for long-term growth as key reasons for the selection. The announcement was made in conjunction with Google’s separate expanded AI partnership with Singapore. However, Google did not disclose a specific investment amount. Singapore has earmarked over $780 million for public AI research from 2025-2030 as part of its National AI strategy.
