Revolutionizing Australian Outback Aviation: Tecnam P2012 STOL

Italian aircraft manufacturer Tecnam has delivered Australia’s first P2012 STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft to Queensland-based Horizon Airways, transforming regional connectivity in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

The delivery on May 19, 2026, marks a significant upgrade for communities in the Torres Strait and Cape areas. The modern twin-engine aircraft will replace Horizon’s aging fleet of 1970s-era planes, bringing a new era of aviation to these remote regions.

Operating from Horn Island, the P2012 STOL features exceptional short-field performance. With an extended 16.6-meter (54.5-foot) wingspan and enhanced lift devices, this aircraft is uniquely equipped to service outer island communities. These include Mabuiag, Darnley, and Murray Islands, known for having some of Australia’s shortest commercial airstrips.

The aircraft accommodates nine air-conditioned passenger seats and incorporates the latest aviation safety technology. With a maximum gross weight of approximately 8,113 lbs, the P2012 STOL brings modern safety, twin-engine reliability, and premium comfort to challenging commercial runways.

Francesco Sferra, Tecnam P2012 sales and special missions manager, stated: “The P2012 STOL was engineered exactly for this kind of critical mission. Bringing modern safety, twin-engine reliability, and premium comfort to the world’s most challenging commercial runways is what this aircraft does best.”
