AOPA Spearheads Pilot Mental Health Awareness Drive
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has unveiled a comprehensive initiative in May 2026, aligning with Mental Health Awareness Month, to address the crucial issue of pilot mental health. This campaign, generously sponsored by Jeppesen ForeFlight, seeks to confront one of aviation’s most daunting challenges: the apprehension many pilots experience about potentially losing their medical certificates if they pursue mental health treatment.
“Mental health remains one of the biggest challenges facing pilots and the aviation industry today,” stated AOPA Acting Co-President Katie Pribyl on May 12, 2026. The initiative is enriched with new educational videos, expert interviews featuring Federal Air Surgeon Dr. Susan Northrup, interactive webinars, and a comprehensive Mental Health Resource Center. Furthermore, AOPA is broadening mental health training for certified flight instructors to provide enhanced support to their students.
The campaign is a continuation of recent legislative advancements, most notably the Senate Commerce Committee’s unanimous approval of the Mental Health in Aviation Act in April 2026. The initiative highlights real-life pilot stories, including those who have successfully regained their medical certificates following mental health treatment. This approach aims to diminish stigma and establish clear avenues for pilots to seek help without fear of career-ending repercussions.
