Remembering Hal Shevers: The Visionary Behind Sporty’s Pilot Shop

Hal Shevers, the pioneering founder of Sporty’s Pilot Shop, passed away on May 12, 2026, at his Florida home at the age of 90. Shevers revolutionized aviation retail and education over six decades, transforming a humble business selling portable aviation radios from the trunk of his car in 1961 into one of the world’s most influential aviation brands.

A Purdue University graduate and dedicated flight instructor, Shevers was a trailblazer in distance pilot education. He created innovative ground school courses that evolved from traveling three-day seminars to comprehensive VHS, DVD, and online training programs. These resources have been used by generations of pilots. His contributions include founding Sporty’s Academy and transforming Ohio’s Clermont County Airport into a thriving general aviation hub. In 2007, his efforts were recognized when he was inducted into the Experimental Aircraft Association Flight Instructor Hall of Fame.

“Hal’s passion and dedication transformed Sporty’s from an idea into a great American business story,” said Sporty’s President and CEO John Zimmerman. Shevers was renowned for his advocacy for general aviation, his commitment to youth aviation programs, and his belief that “without a freshman class, in just three years, there won’t be a senior class.” He is survived by his wife Sandy, his partner of more than 60 years. The employee-owned company remains committed to his vision of creating high-quality aviation products backed by exceptional service.
