Aviation Community Challenges Starlink Over Soaring Aviation Prices

General aviation pilots are voicing their discontent with SpaceX’s Starlink. The satellite internet provider recently restructured its in-motion services, introducing a 100 mph speed cap on standard Roam and Priority plans. This change forces aircraft operators to subscribe to significantly pricier aviation-specific tiers.

As of March 2026, pilots are required to subscribe to either the Aviation 300MPH plan at $250 per month (offering only 20 GB of data) or the Aviation 450MPH plan at $1,000 per month. This represents an approximate 500% price hike from the previous plans, which ranged from $50-$165 monthly.

An online petition urging Starlink to reinstate affordable roaming options has quickly gained traction. Thousands of pilots, who relied on the service for real-time weather updates, flight planning, and safety communications, have already signed.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has expressed concern over these changes. Senior Vice President Jim Coon emphasized, “A large number of general aviation operators across the globe have used Starlink as a safety-enhancing tool, and it is unfortunate that the company has now priced out the lion’s share of general aviation pilots.”
