Introducing the MacBook Neo: Apple’s Bold Entry into the Budget Laptop Market

On March 4, 2026, Apple made a significant move into the budget laptop market with the unveiling of the MacBook Neo. With a starting price of just $599—or a student-friendly $499—this 13-inch laptop is Apple’s direct competitor to Chromebooks and entry-level Windows PCs. Priced $400 below the MacBook Air, the MacBook Neo is poised to attract budget-conscious consumers and educational institutions.

The MacBook Neo is powered by an A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro models. This is a departure from Apple’s more powerful M-series chips. The base configuration boasts 8GB of unified memory, 256GB of storage, and a Liquid Retina display, all while promising up to 16 hours of battery life. Apple asserts that the laptop performs up to 50 percent faster for everyday tasks compared to bestselling Intel Core Ultra 5 PCs and up to three times faster for on-device AI workloads. The device, available in silver, blush, citrus, and indigo, hit the market on March 11, 2026.

Notably, the MacBook Neo is Apple’s most repairable laptop in 14 years according to iFixit. It features a screwed-down battery tray, modular ports and speakers, and no parts pairing restrictions. This is a significant shift in Apple’s approach to device repairability, potentially reflecting changing consumer expectations and regulatory influence in the European market.
