Tailscale Acquires Border0: A Strategic Move Towards Securing AI Agent Access Management
Toronto-based cybersecurity startup Tailscale has made its first strategic acquisition, purchasing Vancouver’s Border0. This move aims to address the emerging security challenges posed by the proliferation of AI agents in enterprise networks. The announcement was made public on March 17, 2026, as reported by Bloomberg.
Border0 has a specialization in privileged access management (PAM), a crucial service that helps companies control who or what can access sensitive infrastructure. This includes production systems, databases, and Kubernetes clusters. As AI agents increasingly become active participants on corporate networks—requesting permissions, moving across systems, and interacting with sensitive data—traditional security tools are proving inadequate for managing these autonomous digital workers.
The acquisition brings Border0’s entire seven-person team to Tailscale, including founder Andree Toonk. Toonk will serve as Director of Engineering, focusing on building out Tailscale’s PAM capabilities. The deal also expands Tailscale’s engineering footprint in Vancouver with a larger office. Border0’s technology is already fully integrated with Tailscale’s platform, offering protocol-aware controls, session visibility, approval workflows, and detailed command and query visibility. The combined platform addresses the shift from basic network connectivity questions to more complex access management scenarios involving databases, admin interfaces, and time-limited permissions.
The move signals that cybersecurity vendors now view AI agent governance as a critical product category rather than a speculative future concern. This comes as companies roll out autonomous tools for coding, operations, support, and other business functions.
