British Airways Revives Melbourne Flights After Two Decades
British Airways has officially announced its plans to recommence daily flights between Melbourne Airport and London-Heathrow Airport from January 11, 2027. This marks a significant return for the airline to Melbourne after a hiatus of 20 years. The last operation of this route by the British flag carrier was in March 2006.
The service will be facilitated using a four-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, equipped with First, Club World (business class), World Traveller Plus (premium economy), and World Traveller (economy) cabins. The new same-aircraft service will operate via Kuala Lumpur International Airport, providing travelers from Victoria, Tasmania, regional New South Wales, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory with direct access to London and connections to the airline’s global network.
This announcement is a part of British Airways’ significant expansion of its global network for winter 2026. The airline will:
- Launch a new route to Colombo, Sri Lanka
- Increase frequencies on several popular routes, including Cape Town, Tokyo Haneda, Barbados, Jamaica, and Costa Rica
This expansion signifies a 9 percent growth in British Airways’ long-haul route network. In response to increased demand due to ongoing Middle East disruptions, the airline has also added extra flights to Bangkok and Singapore.
