ByteDance Delays Seedance 2.0 Global Launch Amid Copyright Controversies
ByteDance has put a hold on the global launch of its Seedance 2.0 AI video generator due to copyright disputes with major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms, as per today’s reports. The parent company of TikTok had initially scheduled the release of this advanced video-generation model for mid-March. However, the rollout has been postponed as the company’s engineers and legal team are addressing the raised legal issues.
The conflict sparked when Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance last month. The accusation was that ByteDance had used Disney characters without obtaining prior permission to train the AI model. Videos produced by Seedance 2.0, which included fabricated scenes featuring Hollywood stars like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, went viral on Chinese social media. This raised concerns about the unauthorized use of copyrighted content.
In response, ByteDance has committed to enhancing safeguards to prevent unauthorized use of intellectual property. The model, which was launched in China in February 2026, has received accolades for its capability to create cinematic storylines from text prompts. This has led to comparisons with other advanced AI models. The Japanese government also initiated an investigation following the appearance of AI-generated videos featuring popular anime characters online. This dispute underscores the escalating tensions between AI innovation and intellectual property protection.
