TVA’s Tecnam P2012 Transforms Power Grid Surveys

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is using the Tecnam P2012 “Sentinel” Special Mission Platform (SMP) to conduct high-tech aerial surveys of its vast electricity grid. The results are transforming utility infrastructure management across the American Southeast.

Equipped with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology and four high-resolution multispectral cameras, the P2012 SMP can survey more than three acres of terrain every second. It photographs every mile of TVA’s transmission network, including the more than 5,000 miles of transmission lines in a critical vegetation management cycle out of TVA’s 16,500-mile network.

The aircraft’s onboard systems create precise 3D models of the earth’s surface. Their resolution can identify a single leaf growing into a right-of-way corridor before it causes a power outage.

Fully implemented in 2025 after five years of research, the program replaces far costlier helicopter-based inspections and increases survey efficiency by an extraordinary 90 times. TVA Aviation Manager Phil Kanagy noted that the aircraft’s twin Lycoming TEO-540-C1A piston engines deliver excellent performance at the low and medium altitudes required for survey work.

The program helps protect critical infrastructure—including hospitals, schools, and nursing homes—from outages while significantly reducing maintenance costs. These savings allow TVA to reinvest in infrastructure for fast-growing regions.
