Indefinite Night Curfews in Paris: A Warning for Travelers

France has imposed indefinite nightly curfews across key central districts of Paris and Lyon. This follows some of the country’s most destructive rioting in years, sending shockwaves through the European travel industry just as the autumn tourism season peaks. The Paris police prefecture announced the curfew zones, covering areas around Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district, will remain in place “for as long as necessary,” running from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM each night.

The unrest, which began as widespread cost-of-living protests on the weekend of October 17–18, 2026, rapidly turned violent. This resulted in more than 2,500 arrests and nearly 1,000 security personnel injuries. Iconic sites, including the Louvre Museum, faced temporary closures, and several Paris Métro stations near affected zones were shut overnight. The UK, US, and Italy have all upgraded their travel advisories for France, with the U.S. State Department maintaining a Level 2 “Exercise Increased Caution” status.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed a “massive” security deployment is planned for the next announced Saturday protests. Travelers already in Paris report that hotels, restaurants, and most attractions outside the curfew zones are operating normally on non-protest nights. Visitors planning trips to France in late October are advised to continuously monitor government travel advisories and avoid designated restricted areas after dark.
