UK Holiday Participation Soars to 88% as Travel Agents Experience Booking Boom
British holidaymakers are travelling in record numbers once again. The ABTA’s Holiday Habits 2026–27 report reveals that a staggering 88% of UK consumers embarked on at least one holiday in the latest reporting period. This matches the all-time pre-pandemic peak recorded in 2019. These findings were unveiled at ABTA’s Travel Convention in Madeira, which took place from October 12–14, 2026.
Domestic holiday participation reached 74%, while 62% of respondents reported taking an overseas trip. Both figures represent a year-on-year increase. Notably, bookings made through travel agents and tour operators rose to 38%. This surge was significantly driven by younger travellers, who are increasingly seeking professional assistance for peace of mind amid global disruptions and tight budgets.
However, ABTA CEO Mark Tanzer expressed caution, describing 2026 as “a tough year for the travel industry.” Rising living costs are already shaping 2027 travel intentions, with late bookings and shorter city breaks emerging as a defining trend throughout the year. Spain extended its dominance as Britain’s favourite overseas destination, with visitor numbers increasing by four percentage points to 36%. Meanwhile, Portugal climbed to sixth place in the popularity rankings.
