Egypt’s Ambitious Plans: Aiming for Regional Tourism Supremacy with Airport Expansion and Investment Drive
Egypt is actively striving to establish itself as a leading regional tourism hub. The country’s ambitious plans encompass airport expansion, aviation modernisation, and substantial foreign hospitality investment. On October 12, 2026, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a meeting in Bangkok with William Heinecke, Chairman of Thailand-based Minor International. Minor International is one of the largest hospitality and restaurant conglomerates in the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting focused on the potential expansion of the company’s presence in Egypt’s thriving tourism and hotel sectors.
The discussions underscored Egypt’s comprehensive infrastructure agenda. This includes the construction of a fourth terminal at Cairo International Airport. This $3.5 billion project is set to increase the airport’s annual capacity from its current level to 70 million passengers. The new terminal will feature artificial intelligence, digital passenger processing, and smart operating systems. This will further establish Cairo’s position as Africa’s leading aviation hub by scheduled seat capacity.
Minister Abdelatty also highlighted investment opportunities in Egypt’s new cities. The New Administrative Capital and New Alamein City were identified as priority zones for international hospitality partners. Egypt’s tourism revenues have already seen a nearly 15% increase in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. This underlines the country’s momentum as a highly sought-after global destination.
