Record-Breaking 21.7M Cruise Arrivals in the Caribbean Amid Slowing Stayover Growth

The Caribbean experienced a surge in cruise traffic in 2026, setting a new record, even as the growth of land-based tourism showed signs of slowing down. The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) reported that cruise passenger visits increased by 11% to a staggering 21.7 million during the first half of 2026. This is the highest figure ever recorded for the region. In contrast, stayover arrivals increased by a mere 1.9%, amounting to approximately 18.9 million visitors between January and June, compared to 18.6 million during the same period in 2025.

Aliyyah Shakeer, CTO Director of Research, pointed out that the first quarter saw a healthy increase of 4.1%, attracting 10 million visitors. However, the momentum waned in Q2, with a slight dip of 0.4% to 8.9 million arrivals. Despite the regional slowdown, certain destinations like St Vincent and the Grenadines and Turks and Caicos reported visitor growth significantly above the Caribbean average.

Looking forward, the region is expecting a robust cruise season, with more than 350 cruise calls anticipated for the 2026–2027 season. Destinations are also focusing on diversifying their tourism offerings. These include sailing, cultural experiences, adventure, and nature-based activities, all aimed at transforming cruise day-trippers into longer-staying guests.
