Anthropics IPO: AI Backlash Identified as Major Risk Factor
As AI startup Anthropic gears up for a highly anticipated stock market debut, it plans to disclose some significant risks in its IPO prospectus. Notably, the company will highlight the escalating public opposition to artificial intelligence as a major risk factor for investors. This includes the intense resistance to the construction of new data centers, as reported by CNBC.
Anthropic, the San Francisco-based innovator behind the Claude family of AI models, confidentially filed a draft S-1 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 1, 2026. The company aims for a Nasdaq listing in October 2026 and is currently valued at an impressive $965 billion. This valuation follows a $65 billion Series H funding round, with Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley leading the offering. The offering is expected to raise over $60 billion, potentially making it one of the largest IPOs in history.
The company has been conducting preliminary investor meetings in San Francisco. A recent Gallup survey revealed that seven out of ten Americans are against AI data center construction in their local area. This could pose a significant political challenge as midterm elections approach. Despite this, Anthropic reported an annualized revenue run rate of $30 billion as of April 2026. This represents a 10x annual growth for three consecutive years. However, the company does not anticipate profitability until 2028.
