Surge in Jet-A Fuel Prices: A Blow to General Aviation
General aviation pilots and flight operators across the United States are grappling with skyrocketing fuel prices. The latest industry data reveals a significant surge in Jet-A prices. According to a fuel survey of more than 200 U.S. Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) conducted by the Aviation Research Group, the average price of Jet-A rose 70 cents per gallon compared to July, settling at a national average of $8.31 per gallon in August 2026.
Year-over-year, Jet-A prices have seen a sharp increase of $1.70 per gallon. This trend is putting pressure on operators, charter companies, and private aircraft owners alike. Regional disparities are also noteworthy: the Western Region is the most expensive market at $9.09 per gallon, while the Central region remains the most affordable at $7.36 per gallon. The Great Lakes region experienced the largest single-month jump, with prices climbing 83 cents compared to July, while New England saw the smallest increase at 42 cents.
Aviation analysts warn that sustained high fuel costs could further dampen general aviation activity. This is particularly concerning for flight schools and smaller operators already operating on tight margins. Pilots and fleet managers are being urged to plan routes strategically and monitor regional pricing closely to manage operating costs.
