AMD Unveils Helios AI Rack, Secures Microsoft as Azure Partner
In a significant move to challenge Nvidia’s supremacy in the artificial intelligence hardware market, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) officially unveiled its rack-scale AI system, Helios, on July 20, 2026. The launch was immediately followed by the announcement of Microsoft as its latest premier customer.
Microsoft has pledged to integrate AMD’s Helios Rackscale Solution into its Azure cloud infrastructure starting from the latter half of 2026. This marks a strategic transition from procuring individual accelerators to adopting a comprehensive rack-scale system, specifically designed for frontier-model AI inference.
Each Helios rack is equipped with 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs, offering up to 432 GB of HBM4 memory and 19.6 TB/s of bandwidth. These racks are powered by AMD’s 6th Gen EPYC Venice processors and Pensando data processing units, providing a single rack with approximately 31 TB of high-bandwidth memory.
Microsoft joins an expanding roster of major Helios customers, which includes Meta, OpenAI, Oracle, and India’s Tata Consultancy Services. In a statement to CNBC, AMD revealed its plans to generate tens of billions of dollars in data center AI revenue starting in 2027, with the majority of it stemming from Helios. Notably, AMD’s data center revenue had already seen a 57% year-over-year increase in Q1 2026.
