Alphabet’s ‘Frozen v2’ AI Chip: A Potential Game-Changer in Efficiency

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, saw its stock surge by as much as 3% on Monday. This followed reports of a clandestine development of a revolutionary server chip. The chip is designed to significantly enhance the efficiency of its Gemini AI models.

As reported by The Information, the chip, internally codenamed “Frozen v2”, could potentially be deployed as early as 2028. Unlike Google’s existing Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which are already in mass production, Frozen v2 plans to integrate Gemini’s AI architecture directly into the silicon. This would reduce computational steps and data movement. The team behind the project believes that the chip could deliver six to ten times greater power efficiency per token than Google’s current custom chips. This could be a critical advantage in the face of rising electricity costs and limited data center capacity faced by AI companies.

When asked to confirm the report, Google responded to TechCrunch with a statement: “Our teams are constantly researching and experimenting with new innovations to deliver maximum performance and efficiency for our users and customers.” As Alphabet’s quarterly earnings are due on Wednesday, analysts from firms including BMO Capital have issued bullish buy ratings ahead of the results. Consequently, GOOGL stock has seen an approximate 11% rise in 2026.
