BETA Technologies Pioneers First US eVTOL Flights: A Leap Forward for Flying Taxis
The era of electric air taxis moved a significant step closer to reality on July 10, 2026. This was the day when Amazon-backed BETA Technologies (NYSE: BETA) successfully completed the first operational flights of the U.S. government’s landmark eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). This sweeping federal initiative was launched by a Trump executive order, with the aim to integrate Advanced Air Mobility aircraft into everyday commercial use.
For these inaugural missions, rather than carrying passengers, the eVTOLs transported manufactured organs for biotech company United Therapeutics. The flights covered approximately 275 nautical miles across four airports in Virginia and Maryland. These included Virginia Tech/Montgomery Executive Airport in Blacksburg and Martin State Airport in Baltimore County. BETA CEO Kyle Clark hailed these missions as a landmark step, setting the stage for routine medical applications at dramatically lower cost.
BETA was selected for seven of the eight FAA-approved eIPP testing programs — more than any other electric aircraft developer. The program spans 26 states and also features competitors such as Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, and Wisk Aero. Full eVTOL certification for BETA’s ALIA 250 aircraft is targeted for 2028. Passenger service is expected to commence before the program concludes around 2029. The company enters the program with a strong backlog of nearly $3.9 billion across 991 aircraft orders and over 160,000 nautical miles already safely flown.
