Oribe Luxury Shampoo Recall: Bacterial Contamination Alert

If you have a bottle of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo in your bathroom, it’s time to check the bottom label. Kao USA Inc., the parent company of the premium Oribe hair care line, has issued a voluntary recall of select lots of its popular densifying shampoo. This action follows the detection of Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in the product during routine testing.

The recall covers both the 8.5-ounce ($52) and 33.8-ounce sizes sold across the United States and Canada. The affected bottles were manufactured between February 21 and February 26, 2026, with lot codes beginning with the prefix “YR” printed in black on the bottom of the bottle.

  • Specific recalled codes include YR010556 (8.5 oz)
  • YR010566, YR010576 (33.8 oz).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that while the bacteria poses “little medical risk” to healthy individuals, those with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses may be more susceptible to infection. In rare cases, this can result in urinary tract infections, eye infections, or blood infections.

All consumers — regardless of health status — are urged to immediately stop using the affected product and contact the Kao Professional Hair Technical Hotline at 1-800-333-2442 or email oribecomplaints@kao.com for a replacement.

The Oribe shampoo is sold at major retailers including Walmart, Sephora, and Target, as well as through salons nationwide. An investigation into the full scope of the contamination remains ongoing.
