Microsoft’s Major AI Pivot Results in 4,800 Job Cuts — Xbox Division Suffers Most
Microsoft has announced a significant layoff on Monday, July 7, 2026, eliminating 4,800 positions — approximately 2.1% of its global workforce. This major structural restructuring is driven by the company’s aggressive pivot towards artificial intelligence.
The division hit hardest is Xbox, Microsoft’s gaming unit. It is set to shed approximately 3,200 jobs throughout fiscal year 2027. Of these, 1,600 roles are being cut immediately. In a candid internal memo, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma conceded that the business is “not healthy,” noting that margins are “3–10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses.”
As part of the overhaul, four gaming studios are being spun off. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions will become independent, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs will transition to new ownership.
The cuts come as Microsoft increases capital spending to a projected $190 billion in 2026 for AI infrastructure and data centers. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman emphasized that the eliminated roles are “not being replaced by AI,” but acknowledged that automation is transforming day-to-day work.
Microsoft’s stock has fallen nearly 23% in the first half of 2026, marking its worst first-half performance since 2022. This latest round of layoffs follows prior waves of layoffs that totaled more than 15,000 jobs last year.
