Record-Breaking Domestic Travel in July 2026: America’s 250th Anniversary Fuels Patriotism

This July is shaping up to be the busiest month for American travel in years, with patriotism playing a significant role. According to Deloitte’s 2026 Summer Travel Survey, 31% of all planned summer travel is set for July, largely driven by America’s 250th anniversary celebrations sweeping the nation.

Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report echoes this sentiment, confirming that the milestone anniversary is fueling a surge in domestic road trips. A whopping 71% of Americans are planning to drive to their next vacation. Searches on Hilton.com reveal a sharp rise in interest for outdoor escapes and regional favorites, including destinations like Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma City, Madison (Wisconsin), and Mobile (Alabama).

Hotel demand data paints an equally striking picture. New booking figures from HotelPlanner show hotel demand for the July 4 weekend was up 48% over last year, with average hotel rates climbing 30% year-over-year. Top destinations included Las Vegas, San Diego, Chicago, Washington D.C., Honolulu, Nashville, and New Orleans. Meanwhile, flight search platform JustFly reported that searches for Washington D.C. more than tripled (+173%) year-over-year, while Las Vegas was up 93% and Denver increased 72%.

Despite the travel boom, affordability remains a concern. A survey of 5,000 Americans found that four in ten will skip summer travel entirely due to high costs. Even among those who do travel, 31% report being more budget-conscious, opting for closer-to-home destinations and last-minute bookings over costly international trips. This is reflected in a decline of 17.4% in search interest for international trips compared to last year.
