Historic Fivefold Hike in Japan’s Visa Fee Shakes Up Travel Industry from July 2026

Japan has officially implemented one of its most sweeping travel policy changes in nearly half a century. A fivefold increase in visa application fees is set to take effect from July 1, 2026. As per Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), single-entry visa fees have soared from approximately ¥3,000 to ¥15,000. Simultaneously, multiple-entry visas have escalated from ¥6,000 to a whopping ¥30,000. The international departure tax has also seen a threefold increase — from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 — a charge that is directly incorporated into airline ticket prices.

This move significantly impacts travelers from key source markets, including China, the Philippines, India, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. Japan witnessed a staggering 7.86 million visa issuances in 2025, marking one of the most robust tourism recovery cycles in modern history. China alone accounted for 73% of all visas. Authorities have stated that the fee restructuring — the first major revision since 1978 — aims to modernize consular operations, fund digital border systems, and shift Japan’s tourism model towards high-value, sustainable visitor growth.

Despite the steep increase, demand is projected to remain strong. This is driven by the robust interest in cultural tourism, business travel, and Japan’s iconic destinations. These include:

  • Tokyo
  • Kyoto
  • Osaka
  • Mount Fuji
