Qualcomm Acquires AI Startup Modular in Deal Valued at Nearly $4 Billion
Chip manufacturing giant, Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM), has recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire the AI software infrastructure company, Modular Inc. Based in Silicon Valley, the deal is valued at approximately $3.92 billion. Announced on June 25, 2026, this acquisition is one of Qualcomm’s most significant moves to expand its presence in the rapidly growing generative and agentic AI market, which spans both data center and edge computing environments.
Modular is renowned for its AI-native, hardware-agnostic software platform. This platform enables AI models to run efficiently across a broad spectrum of hardware architectures. These include CPUs, GPUs, NPUs, and custom ASICs, without the need for developers to rewrite code for each chip. This “write once, run anywhere” capability is seen as a major strategic asset as the AI industry fragments across competing hardware vendors. As per the deal’s terms, Qualcomm expects to issue up to 19.2 million shares of common stock to Modular’s equity holders. The transaction is projected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
Chris Lattner, the co-founder and CEO of Modular, and the engineer behind the LLVM compiler and Apple’s Swift programming language, stated that joining Qualcomm would provide the company “the scale and platform reach” to accelerate its mission of building a more open AI ecosystem. Analysts view this deal as a critical step for Qualcomm to challenge NVIDIA’s software dominance in AI infrastructure.
