Aviation Pilots Protest Against Starlink’s In-Flight Internet Price Surge

General aviation pilots worldwide are voicing their discontent against SpaceX’s Starlink. The satellite internet behemoth revamped its pricing tiers in early 2026, making in-flight connectivity unaffordable for most GA pilots.

The dispute revolves around Starlink’s decision to cap its standard Roam and Priority plans at a mere 100 mph (87 knots) ground speed. This speed limit is easily surpassed by most piston and turboprop aircraft within seconds of takeoff. To retain in-flight connectivity, pilots are compelled to subscribe to Starlink’s new aviation-specific tiers: the Aviation 300MPH plan at $250/month (offering only 20 GB of data) or the Aviation 450MPH plan at $1,000/month. Before this change, pilots could use roam plans for approximately $50 per month, which included 100 GB of high-speed data.

A Change.org petition protesting this change has gathered thousands of signatures. Pilots are accusing Starlink of a “bait and switch” tactic. On March 9, 2026, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations, which represent over 400,000 pilots in 80 countries, sent a formal letter to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. They urged the company to reconsider its decision. However, SpaceX has yet to respond formally.

“A large number of general aviation operators across the globe have used Starlink as a safety-enhancing tool,” said Jim Coon, AOPA Senior Vice President of Government Affairs. “It’s unfortunate that the company has now priced out the lion’s share of general aviation pilots.”
