Indie Brands Ignite a Second Global Surge in K-Beauty

South Korea’s cosmetics industry is experiencing a potent second global wave. Unlike the first, this surge isn’t led by legacy giants. Instead, it’s the fast-moving indie brands, social media virality, and a new generation of sophisticated manufacturers that are fuelling this historic expansion, as revealed in a major report published today by The Korea Herald.

In the January–May 2026 period alone, Korean cosmetics exports reached a staggering $5.6 billion. This is a significant increase from $4.6 billion during the same period a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. This surge follows a record-breaking 2025, when South Korea’s cosmetics exports climbed to an all-time high of $11.4 billion. This achievement ranks the country as the world’s second-largest cosmetics exporter, overtaking the United States and trailing only France.

Interestingly, the US has now become Korea’s top beauty export destination, marking a major shift away from China. As noted by Analyst Park Jong-dae of Hana Securities, “While China was the largest export market for Korean cosmetics in 2024, the US became the top destination in 2025.” Indie brands such as APR, d’Alba, Beauty of Joseon, Anua, and SKIN1004 are driving this growth, choosing to bypass traditional retail for platforms like Amazon, TikTok Shop, Sephora, and Ulta Beauty.

South Korea’s Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol has also stepped in, declaring K-beauty a future strategic industry. He stated, “The K-beauty industry has expanded beyond the cosmetics sector to become a future strategic industry combining AI, data, and devices.”
