World’s Largest Peacetime Airlift Soars for the Special Olympics
The general aviation community is buzzing with excitement as one of the most inspiring events of the year takes flight: the 9th Special Olympics Airlift. Spearheaded by Textron Aviation (NYSE: TXT), the airlift is scheduled to operate on Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 27, 2026. This event, globally acknowledged as the largest peacetime airlift, is currently underway.
Expectations for this year’s effort include the involvement of approximately 120 Cessna, Beechcraft, and Hawker aircraft—from Citation jets to King Airs and Hawker jets. These aircraft are set to transport over 800 Special Olympics athletes and coaches from all corners of the United States to the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. Aircraft are scheduled to land or depart every three minutes from St. Paul Downtown Airport Holman Field (KSTP), effectively eliminating financial and logistical barriers to participation.
Backing this monumental effort are organizations like the FAA, EAA, GAMA, NBAA, Signature Aviation, and Textron GSE. Textron GSE is providing 16 baggage and cargo tractors—including 14 TUG M1A and two TUG MT units—for ground operations. Since its inception in 1987, the airlift has flown over 10,000 athletes and coaches nationwide.
“The Airlift is more than just a flight; it’s about giving these champions the chance to shine,” said Ron Draper, President and CEO of Textron Aviation.
