FIFA World Cup 2026: Hotel Rates Skyrocket by 40-80% as Tournament Commences

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which officially commenced on June 11 in 16 host cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is causing one of the most significant surges in hospitality demand in recent history. Consequently, travelers are feeling the financial impact. Industry data referenced by travel management firm CTM reveals that hotel rates in the 11 U.S. host cities — including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Miami — are running 40 to 80% above seasonal norms during peak match windows. New York, in particular, has identified specific gridlock dates commencing June 13.

Data sourced from CoStar and obtained by Front Office Sports, indicates that New York City leads U.S. cities with a 57% hotel booking rate on match dates as of June 13. Interestingly, Mexican cities are outperforming their American counterparts, with Guadalajara reaching a 73% booking rate on June 18 and Mexico City at 61%. Furthermore, it is anticipated that over 13 million fans will travel to host cities throughout the tournament, according to industry estimates.

The surge in demand is also reflected in ticket prices. The most affordable seat for the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium is priced at $2,030 — a staggering increase from the 2022 Qatar tournament. For the first time in World Cup history, FIFA has confirmed the use of dynamic pricing, implying that prices may continue to fluctuate. Both travel managers and fans are being advised to secure accommodation and ground transport immediately or consider alternative cities where feasible.
