FIFA World Cup 2026 Begins: Host Cities Experience Mixed Tourism Impact

June 11, 2026 — The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially begins today, marking the start of matches that will run until July 19. This year, the tournament spans across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, making it the largest FIFA World Cup ever staged. The tournament boasts 48 teams and 104 matches, creating a truly international event.

As the sporting world celebrates the commencement of the largest football tournament in history, tourism data paints a varied picture for the host cities. A survey conducted by the American Hotel and Lodging Association reveals softer than expected hotel bookings across all 11 U.S. host cities. This is largely due to visa delays and immigration concerns discouraging some international visitors.

  • Miami, which will host seven matches including a Quarterfinal and the Bronze Final at Hard Rock Stadium, is faring the best. Only 45% of local hotel owners are projecting a shortfall.
  • In contrast, 75% of hotel owners in Philadelphia and San Francisco are expecting shortfalls.
  • The situation is even more dire in Kansas City, with 85–90% of hotel owners predicting shortfalls.

Despite the cautious booking trend, spending among committed travelers is on the rise. Luxury tourists are increasingly seeking curated, premium itineraries that extend beyond match attendance. These include private transportation, VIP hospitality, and exclusive dining experiences. The FIFA World Cup New York/New Jersey Host Committee estimates that the tournament could generate approximately $3.3 billion in economic activity for its region alone, supporting more than 26,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, Airbnb — the official FIFA accommodation partner — projects that its guests will generate $3.6 billion in local economic impact across all host cities during the tournament. This could potentially surpass even the Paris 2024 Olympics as the largest event in the platform’s history.
