ClickUp Reduces Workforce by 22%, Introduces $1M Salary Bands for AI Specialists
Productivity software giant, ClickUp, made a significant announcement on May 21, 2026. The company is laying off approximately 290 employees, equating to 22% of its workforce. At the same time, it is introducing million-dollar salary bands for staff members who excel in the application of artificial intelligence (AI).
CEO Zeb Evans presented the layoffs not as a cost-cutting measure, but as a strategic move towards building what he terms a “100x organization”. In this setup, AI agents outnumber employees at a ratio of 3:1. The $4 billion company has already implemented around 3,000 internal AI agents to manage complex tasks across various departments. Employees are now expected to supervise these agents and review their output, rather than executing the work themselves.
“Most savings from this change will flow directly back into the people who stay. We’ll be introducing million-dollar salary bands,” Evans stated in his announcement. The cash compensation, not equity, will be awarded to employees who demonstrate a “100x impact” by effectively creating or managing AI systems.
Evans has restructured the remaining roles into three distinct categories:
- Builders: Engineers and product managers who direct AI agents
- System Managers: Employees who automate workflows
- Front-liners: Customer-facing staff
“The people that automate their jobs with AI will always have a job,” he asserted.
This announcement mirrors a wider industry trend. A recent Gartner survey revealed that approximately 80% of companies utilizing autonomous technology have reduced their workforce. However, these reductions have not necessarily resulted in significant financial returns. The tech industry has already lost more than 100,000 jobs across roughly 250 events in 2026 alone.
