Samsung Prevents Potential Strike with Generous Worker Bonuses

Samsung Electronics’ unionized workers have voted in favor of a groundbreaking wage agreement on Wednesday, May 27. This move has successfully averted a potentially disruptive strike at the world’s largest memory chip manufacturer. The deal includes an unprecedented bonus package, with an average of approximately $340,000 for chip division employees.

The company’s largest union announced that a significant 73.7% of the 62,616 voting members approved the tentative agreement. This agreement was reached just 90 minutes before a planned 18-day strike was set to begin. The approval follows intense, government-mediated negotiations led by South Korea’s Labor Minister, Kim Young-hoon.

As per the agreement, Samsung will allocate special bonuses equivalent to 10.5% of operating profits to its highly profitable chip division. The bonuses will be paid in company stock over a minimum of 10 years. This is contingent on the chip division achieving operating profit targets exceeding 200 trillion won ($133.65 billion) for 2026-2028, with reduced targets of 100 trillion won from 2029-2035.

Samsung shares experienced a surge, increasing as much as 8% in Seoul trading following the announcement. The agreement effectively prevents potential disruptions to global semiconductor supply chains. Samsung is a crucial supplier of memory chips, which are vital to smartphones, electric vehicles, and AI data centers powering services like ChatGPT and Claude.
