SpaceX Gears Up for the Groundbreaking Launch of Starship V3 After a Brief Postponement
SpaceX has rescheduled the debut of its most advanced Starship rocket to Wednesday, May 20, after initially targeting May 19 for the historic Flight 12 test mission. The launch window opens at 6:30 PM EDT from the company’s Starbase facility in South Texas.
Starship Version 3 represents a major leap forward in SpaceX’s ambitions, featuring significant redesigns including:
- Upgraded Raptor 3 engines that produce 551,000 pounds of thrust—up from 507,000 pounds in previous versions.
- The Super Heavy booster now has three larger grid fins instead of four.
- The entire system has undergone dozens of upgrades focused on enabling full and rapid reusability.
This will be the first launch from SpaceX’s newly designed Launch Pad 2, which features both launch and catch capabilities. However, SpaceX will not attempt to catch either the booster or the upper stage during this test flight. Instead, the Super Heavy booster will perform a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico about seven minutes after liftoff, while the Starship upper stage will aim for the Indian Ocean roughly an hour into the mission.
Starship V3 is crucial for NASA’s Artemis program, as it will serve as the lunar lander for the Artemis 4 mission in 2028. The rocket is also essential for launching SpaceX’s next-generation Starlink satellites and could enable the company’s plans for orbital data centers.
