Major Service Change: Delta Reduces In-Flight Services on Short Flights

Delta Air Lines is initiating a significant service alteration today, May 19, 2026. The change involves the removal of all food and beverage services on approximately 450 daily flights that cover distances under 350 miles. This policy impacts economy and comfort passengers on short-haul routes, although the first-class service remains unaffected.

The newly introduced distance-based service model eliminates complimentary snacks, drinks, coffee, tea, and water from flights under 350 miles. However, flights covering 350 miles or more will continue to receive full beverage and snack service. This move positions Delta as the most restrictive among major U.S. carriers. For comparison, United Airlines ceases service at 300 miles, and American Airlines at 250 miles.

High-traffic routes such as the Los Angeles to San Francisco route will be significantly impacted by this change. Delta presents this adjustment as a means to create “a more consistent experience” across its network. The airline assures that crews will remain “visible, available, and focused on caring for customers” even without service duties. This decision is a response to the surge in jet fuel costs amid the Iran conflict, pushing airlines to cut routes, raise fares, and rethink what’s included in tickets.
