Beijing’s Capital Museum Debuts Historic Maya-Andean Exhibition for International Museum Day
In honor of International Museum Day on May 18, Beijing’s esteemed Capital Museum unveiled one of China’s most extensive cultural exhibitions. This grand showcase features nearly 800 precious artifacts from the ancient Maya and Andean civilizations.
The exhibition, christened as “Maize, Gold, Jaguar: Ancient Maya and Andean Civilizations,” was inaugurated on May 17, 2026. It serves as the latest addition to the museum’s ongoing “World Civilizations: Exchange and Mutual Learning” series. The exhibition sets a new benchmark for the Capital Museum by bringing together artifacts from more than 20 cultural institutions across Mexico and Peru, thereby setting new records in terms of the number of exhibits and international collaborations.
The unique “three 5,000s” spatial layout of the exhibition spans a total of 15,000 square meters. It includes a 5,000-square-meter zone dedicated to American artifacts, another 5,000-square-meter zone for Chinese artifacts, and a 5,000-square-meter immersive experience area. This innovative design juxtaposes ancient Chinese civilization with Maya and Andean civilizations, facilitating a cross-cultural dialogue that transcends millennia.
As per the organizers, the “Maya World” section of the exhibition is a first for Beijing, with 90% of the objects being displayed in the city for the first time. The “Treasures of the King” section is also making waves, with 80% of the artifacts making their China debut and 50% having never left Peru before. The exhibition will continue to enthrall audiences until October 2026.
