FAA Accelerates NOTAM System Modernization, Completes First Phase Ahead of Schedule
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) made a significant announcement on May 12, 2026. The first phase of the critical modernization effort for the nation’s Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) system has been successfully completed. This achievement comes more than a year ahead of the original 2027 schedule, replacing the aging infrastructure that infamously failed during a nationwide ground stop in January 2023.
The FAA has bid farewell to the legacy U.S. NOTAM System (USNS) and transitioned thousands of users to the new, cloud-based NOTAM Management Service (NMS). This modern system is designed with the goal of preventing nationwide airspace shutdowns, enhancing safety, and improving communications for pilots and flight planners. The NMS is responsible for issuing more than 4 million NOTAMs annually, communicating temporary changes such as runway closures, airspace restrictions, and obstructions.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford expressed that the transition to this state-of-the-art system strengthens safety and reliability across the National Airspace System. The modernization was developed in collaboration with CGI Federal, utilizing a streamlined vendor challenge to expedite the process. A second phase, planned for later this year, will retire the remaining Federal NOTAM Service infrastructure, making NMS the single authoritative source for all NOTAMs.
